Academic Health Programs

Schools Outside Alaska

For those health professions which do not have a program available in Alaska, individuals may choose to attend a school out of state. Some of these individuals spend one or more years in Alaska studying basic science, English, math and other courses and then transfer to a college out of state. It is nearly impossible to list all the schools located outside Alaska that have programs in the health professions. However, the following sources of information are available:

  1. Your first source of information should be the counselors and teachers at your high school who can help you send away for more information or find it on-line.

  2. Another excellent source of information is the career planning offices at the various colleges in Alaska. These offices have college catalogs and reference books listing the schools in the United States that offer the sort of program you are looking for.

  3. The National Library of Medicine’s website is a well done and up-to-date resource for finding links to sites that have information about medical education and careers: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/services/medicaled.html.

  4. The following books are also excellent resources. They are found in most high schools, public libraries, college libraries, and bookstores. You can locate specific schools in these books by searching the index for careers, programs, or degrees that interest you.
