Alaska AHECs
The Alaska Center for Rural Health (ACRH) was created in 1987 by rural health care providers, educators and administrators to ensure comprehensive and culturally relevant health care is available to rural Alaskans.
In 2005, ACRH secured a federal designation to serve as the Alaska Area Health Education Center (AHEC), a statewide university-industry partnership that focuses on strengthening and diversifying Alaska’s health workforce. Today, Alaska’s AHEC has grown to five, regionally based Centers serving the Interior, Western, South Central, Southeastern and Northwestern regions of Alaska.
Specifically, Alaska’s AHEC Program focuses in three areas:
• Engaging Alaskans from disadvantaged backgrounds into health careers
• Coordinating clinical experiences for health professions students to rural communities and with underserved populations to encourage employment in these areas
• Facilitating connections to CE/CME for providers in underserved areas to enhance health workforce retention
