Alaska AHECs

In September 2005, the Alaska Center for Rural Health, UAA secured an Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program from the HHS Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Health Professions.

The Alaska AHEC is a statewide university-industry partnership focused on strengthening Alaska’s health workforce. Specifically, it works in three distinct areas:
• Getting Alaskans interested in health careers;
• Coordinating and supporting clinical rotations, to encourage health professions students to secure employment in underserved areas and with underserved populations; and
• Providing a variety of continuing education opportunities for rural health care providers in underserved areas towards the retention of those health care workers.

These are our “3 Rs”: Recruitment, Rotations and Retention

The Alaska AHEC Program Office contracts with industry partners and health organizations which have created AHEC Centers, serving distinct geographic areas. Currently Alaska hosts 3 Alaska AHEC Centers and 1 AHEC Program Office.
