Alaska EPSCoR

Alaska EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) is a university-state partnership that promotes research capacity in Alaska. The purpose of Alaska EPSCoR is to address national and local scientific priorities and to support the training of students for a 21st century technologically-based workforce. Alaska EPSCoR was recently awarded funding from the National Science Foundation for its phase 3 proposal, “Resilience and Vulnerability in a Rapidly Changing North: The Integration of Physical, Biological and Social Processes.” The award began July 1, 2007 and ran through June 30, 2010. The Phase 3 funding was awarded limited funding for a supplemental year.

Increasing research capacity within Alaska and making the results relevant and accessible to the Alaska public are two main goals of Alaska EPSCoR. They achieve this through a variety of programs including student fellowships available to both undergraduates and graduates, and travel funding for graduate students to attend conferences and participate in knowledge exchange.  Some of the planned programs for 2010-11 include travel support for EPSCoR students, faculty and staff; fellowships for both graduate and undergraduate students; and Integrative Faculty Development Grants.
