ANSEP Pre-College Programs
The Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP™) is a longitudinal program that works with students from the time they are in middle school all the way through graduate school. Their objective is to effect a systemic change in the hiring patterns of Indigenous Americans in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. ANSEP recently expanded their program to include students interested in career paths in the biological sciences. The ANSEP Pre-College Component has several different programs, briefly described below. More detailed information can be found on the ANSEP web site:
Computer Assembly: Students assemble computers and earn the right to keep them by completing trigonometry, physics, and chemistry. This program targets high school freshmen and sophomores at a variety of schools around the state. There are no set dates.
Tablet Tutoring: Participating students, who are enrolled in algebra, biology, chemistry, physics and/or trigonometry, are given access to a virtual classroom to meet with tutors on-line. This program targets students who have participated in the Pre-College component of ANSEP.
Middle School Academy: This summer science academic camp provides activities, experiments, projects and field experiences for students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grades in the fall. The camp promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. It is a two week academic residential camp held on the UAA campus.
Summer Acceleration Academy: This academy recruits students during their sophomore and junior years in high school. The residential academy is held on the UAA campus for 6 weeks during the summer. Students choose two classes from a list of science, math, and engineering classes. Students attend classes together and participate in group study time. All students who successfully complete the Academy are awarded a $2,000 scholarship support good at any University of Alaska campus.
Dates:
Middle School Academy: July 14-26, 2012
Summer Acceleration Academy: May 19-June 29, 2012 (Application deadline March 30, 2012)
