Camps and Internships
SMDEP
Hosted by the University of Washington, the Summer Medical Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is a six-week enrichment program for underrepresented college freshmen and sophomores interested in medicine or dentistry. It is funded by Robert Wood Johnson. SMDEP is designed to give participants exposure to the fields of medicine and dentistry and to boost academic skills. The program features enrichment courses in biology, chemistry, physics, biostatistics, and communications. Students are matched with a mentor who they spend time with each week in a structured clinical or laboratory setting. There are also visits to migrant camps and lectures on ethics, cultural competency and related healthcare issues. Ten campuses around the country offer SMDEP. The University of Washington accepts residents of all states with a focus on the WWAMI region which includes Alaska. The program takes place in Seattle. SMDEP provides housing, travel and a stipend.
