Teacher Industry Externship

The Teacher Industry Externship (TIE) Program, hosted by Alaska’s regional AHECs, is part of a larger Department of Labor and Workforce Development program that provides professional learning opportunities for educators, and eventually their students.  AHECs sponsor health care-related externships for educators working with students in grades 7-12. In 2011, three regional AHECs are participating in the program: Interior, South Central and Southeast. Externships consist of two weeks and 80 hours of participation with the host organization and regional AHEC centers. Externships occur during the months of May and June, depending on when school ends and the availability of the healthcare facility. During the externship, educators attend a series of job shadows aimed at exposing them to the many facets of health care. Participants are required to complete a project relevant to healthcare and the host facility. Examples of previous projects include curriculum writing, community issues research such as emergency preparedness, domestic violence prevention, speaker toolboxes and promotional materials related to health care careers. Participants receive a stipend and earn 3 UAA professional development credits.

Applications are due by April 1, 2012.
