Youth First Responders

The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) Emergency Medical Program and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service’s 4-H program sponsor two Youth First Responder groups in Southeast Alaska-one in Sitka and one on Prince of Wales Island. Both programs are for local students ages 14-18. Students learn about health careers by training to earn their certificates for Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Students in this program have been involved in a variety of activities such as helping plan and organize a citywide flu clinic, participating in wellness fairs and EMS symposiums, helping out with hospital mass-casualty disaster drills, and providing emergency medical services at local events such as basketball games and running races to name a few.
